Creating their own sanctuary (StreetWise)

The bustling sidewalks of Chicago’s 26th Street are awash with life and colour. Busy men barter with passers by as they try to offload everything from plastic cups of melon, cucumber, and pineapple to coloured beach balls and off brand purchases. Yet this busy and innocuous scene hides the woes of its central characters. Many of the peddlers used to have jobs: but no more, as the decaying booths and empty storefronts display the current recession’s heavy toll on Chicago’s Latinos.
