DUBAI, United Arab Emirates: Dubai is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. Thanks to the manual labour provided by over 100,000 construction workers from as far afield as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China and beyond, the Gulf Emirate is able to offer luxurious office and living space to the worlds wealthiest businesses and individuals. Yet the foreign labourers who have physically powered this rapid expansion do not share in the bounty of their productivity. Many make as little as 300 euro a month, live in cramped labour camps and are repeatedly exploited by the Emirates weak and unfavourable labour laws. Straat magazine photographer Rokus van den Bout documents the daily lives of Dubai's construction workers.
