NASNA (North America)The North American Street Newspaper Association (NASNA) is a nonprofit trade association of street newspapers in North America (formed in 1996), supporting 31 member street papers (23 in the United States and 8 in Canada). NASNA is the regional support network of the International Network of Street Papers and full NASNA members are also members of INSP. NASNA has had a strategic alliance with INSP since 2007 and the Directors of both networks communicate regularly about network, project and fundraising opportunities.
In partnership with the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF), INSP launched its 'Strengthening Civil Society & Developing Independent Media in Africa' project in December 2009. This project aims to strengthen the capacity of the six existing street papers in Africa and forge a stronger independent media presence in Africa. The network is now working together as ‘INSP Africa', with support from INSP's Regional Training & Development Manager Sven Mangels, who is based in Cape Town and travels regularly to all projects; and Regional Co-ordinator, Samba Yonga of The Big Issue Zambia.
In 2008 (following the dissolution of the German street newspaper network), a group of German language street papers reformed as the INSP ‘German Speaking Platform'. The group seeks to work together for their specific regional and linguistic needs while remaining connected with the larger network. The group is co-ordinated by Beatrice Gerst (formerly of Trott-war, Stuttgart, Germany), working in close contact with INSP. The 40 German-language street papers communicate closely together, and in 2010 they organised two separate street paper conferences in Berlin.
In 2010, INSP carried out a needs assessment for street papers in Latin America. INSP staff also met with papers by teleconference and face-to-face, while the Brazilian papers held a regional meeting in São Paolo to discuss possibilities for a more structured approach to networking in Latin America.
Over the past two years, the Norwegian street papers have been developing their own regional network, led by Megafon in Bergen, using the name ‘INSP Norway'. The members have been working on creating their own charter, mission and goals in line with INSP's Street Paper Charter.
