Enterprising solutions to poverty

INSP Project Work in the Global South

In recent years, street papers have become increasingly recognised as successful poverty reduction tools in some of the poorest countries on Earth. In response to increasing enquiries from local organisations, INSP now places a special emphasis on street paper development in the Global South.

INSP Africa

Beginning in 2006, INSP started a two-year ‘Focus on Africa'. Alongside capacity-building initiatives for existing INSP members in the region, INSP has drawn upon the vast collective knowledge and experience of our global membership to provide systematic training, consultancy and project management for the following new African street papers:

  • The Big Issue Ethiopia - Launched November 2006
  • The Big Issue Kenya - Launched January 2007
  • The Big Issue Zambia - Launched August 2007
  • The Big Issue Malawi - Launched January 2009
  • Clin d'oeil, Burundi - Launched February 2009

Additional work is presently ongoing with a local group in Zimbabwe.

The Bigger Picture

Every two years, INSP selects a new strategic focus for our development work, based on an assessment of needs and contacts in different regions of the Global South. Beginning in late 2008 and 2009, we will be looking toward expanding our focus to supporting emerging street papers in two new regions - Latin America and Asia.

INSP Poverty Solutions

‘Poverty Solutions' is a fundraising arm for INSP development projects, with a number of individual donors who support a wide range of initiatives. For example, through the pioneering ‘Sponsor-a-Vendor' scheme, gifts from individual supporters throughout Europe enable street paper vendors in Russia to buy essential food, medications and winter clothing.
